Initially, Naudia stated that she grew up wanting to become a trigonometry teacher because of her love for one of her math teachers; however, when Naudia had to go to the NICU to visit a family member one day, she told me she fell in love with wanting to learn more about how children develop. Furthermore, she said the moment she saw that little baby lying in the incubator, she knew medicine was the path she wanted to take. After her years of schooling, Naudia moved from southern Mississippi to Memphis to begin her career as a nurse. Then, Naudia worked as a bedside nurse for a while and also as a NICU nurse for a bit but then went on to become a nurse practitioner. Though Naudia initially wanted to become a neonatal nurse practitioner, the jobs were limited, so she decided to become a family nurse practitioner since the hours were more flexible, and the jobs were more available. Currently, Naudia works at Le Bonheur Children's Hospital as a family nurse practitioner in the Anesthesiology Department, and she is going back to school this upcoming fall of 2016 to work on receiving her doctorate.
Because Naudia's son, Matthew, and my brother play sports together at Memphis University School, I met Naudia a few years ago at a sporting event held for the team Matthew and my brother were playing on. After discussions with Naudia about her role as a nurse practitioner at Le Bonheur, I became very interested in her career, and I started to wonder about the day-to-day lifestyle her job entails. Once I decided I was going to do an internship with Hutchison Leads, I gave Naudia a quick ring, and she kindly accepted my request to intern with her over the summer. The process of setting up my internship went very smoothly as Naudia was very eager for me to shadow her for a week to learn more about medicine and her role as a nurse practitioner. My first day at the hospital, June 13th, was a very exciting one as I had the opportunity to learn more about Naudia's past and the path she took to arrive at her current position at Le Bonheur Children's Hospital. AuthorMy name is Caroline Rogers, and I am a current rising senior at Hutchison School. This blog is dedicated to my summer internship through Hutchison Leads at Le Bonheur Children's Hospital in Memphis, TN. Because of my passion and interest for all things medicine, I decided to explore the field of nursing with Family Nurse Practitioner Naudia James who works with the Anesthesiology Department at the hospital. I aspire to attend nursing school as a college student, and I am thrilled to begin studying medicine and exploring a topic that interests me greatly. |
