The end of my last day consisted of assessing multiple dental patients being treated for dental caries and one scheduled patient visit in Naudia's office. For a few of the dental patients, I spent some time with Cathy, and we reviewed the patients' charts and got information from parents regarding the patients' medical history. One of the patients was Hispanic and could speak English; however, his mother did not, so we had to bring in the blue phone to communicate with the patient's mother. This phone has two phones connected to it, one that the nurse practitioner speaks into and one that the patient's mother listens from. The nurse practitioner calls an interpreter on the line, and the interpreter intervenes in the conversation and conveys the information in Spanish from the nurse practitioner to the patient's mother. While very helpful, this process takes a long time and unfortunately slows the nurse practitioner down since her words have to be translated into Spanish for the patient's mother to understand.
After completing the evaluation and conversation with the patient's mother, Naudia and I headed back to her office to assess a patient coming in to have her adenoids and tonsils removed. This anesthesia evaluation did take a little while as the patient does have other current medical conditions such as diabetes that is watched by various doctors. We assessed the patient and Naudia acquired all the needed information from the patient's mother, and then it sadly was time for me to head out for the day. I could not thank Naudia, as well as Cathy, for kindly taking the time out of their busy schedules to allow me to shadow all week. It was an experience I will never forget, and I aspire to be as good a nurse practitioner as Naudia is. I can say, without a doubt, that this internship has definitely confirmed that I want to go down the medical path in my future. I cannot wait to begin schooling, and I hope that one day I will have a job very similar to that of Naudia's. Le Bonheur has a special place in my heart!
