After seeing the multiple patients with Cathy and taking a quick lunch break, Naudia and I headed up to the patient floors of the hospital to assess more patients for their pre-operative anesthesia evaluations. The first patient we saw was a teenager who had just recently been in a car crash and been admitted to Le Bonheur in order to have a spinal fusion. This accident happened right before this young man's birthday, so the hospital room was filled with birthday signs and posters, and Naudia told me that there is a program in place called Icing Smiles that delivers personalized cakes to patients with chronic illnesses. After assessing this patient and talking to the family about the patient's past medical history, Naudia and I went to check up on another patient who also had been involved in a crash. He was in an ATV crash, which resulted in a degloved leg and extensive wounds to his leg. When we went to see this patient today, he was looking to hopefully be discharged to go home soon since he has been at Le Bonheur for a few months having surgeries and is doing better. Once we were finished assessing these patients, we headed back down for the day and Naudia reviewed tomorrow's schedule and then let me go for the day.

AuthorMy name is Caroline Rogers, and I am a current rising senior at Hutchison School. This blog is dedicated to my summer internship through Hutchison Leads at Le Bonheur Children's Hospital in Memphis, TN. Because of my passion and interest for all things medicine, I decided to explore the field of nursing with Family Nurse Practitioner Naudia James who works with the Anesthesiology Department at the hospital. I aspire to attend nursing school as a college student, and I am thrilled to begin studying medicine and exploring a topic that interests me greatly. |
